Fast facts:
The Botanical Garden Muenchen-Nymphenburg is part of the Bavarian Natural History Collections. It covers an area of 22 hectares and is located next to the palace garden of the Nymphenburg Castle. About 14,000 species of plants from all over the world are cultivated in the Garden's greenhouses and outdoor areas. Particularly outstanding are the rock garden ("Alpinum"), the ornamentals ("Schmuckhof"), and the rhododendron grove ("Rhododendronhain"). Highlights in the greenhouses are the collections of succulents, orchids, and bromeliads. In addition to the permanent horticultural exhibitions, the Garden hosts numerous special exhibits and cultural events, such as the annual rose show ("Rosenschau"), tropical butterfly exhibit, and "Long Night", an evening in the Fall during which many of Munich's museums and natural history collections are open to the public until 2 o'clock in the morning.

The Botanical Garden also maintains a small (1 ha) alpine garden ("Schachen Garten") in the Alps, next to the mountain Schachen at 1850 m a.s.l., not far from the city of Partenkirchen. This garden displays plants from the Alps and other major mountain ranges, such as the Himalayas and Rockies. It is open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. between the beginning of July and the middle of September, depending on the first snowfall. Access is by foot only and involves a relatively steep hike of about an hour from the car park.
